extrerritoriality, but being, as stated in the agreement,

en enlargement of British territory is in an entirely

different category from the concessions and settlements in

China in which we are relinquishing our special rights.

His Majesty's Ambassador at Chungking has therefore

bcen instructed to inform the Chinese Goverment that His

Majesty's Government regard the leased territory as

outside the scope of the present treaty.
